Audience Management module overview

An overview of the Audience Management module, covering how to build and sync custom and lookalike audiences to Facebook and Google for paid advertising campaigns.

Written by Fatma Abid

The Audience Management module enables you to build targeted audiences from your Acteol customer data and sync them directly to Facebook Ads Manager and Google Ads. This bridges your CRM data and paid advertising platforms, allowing you to run highly targeted campaigns to your existing customers and reach new prospects who look like your best customers.

What you can do

  • Build custom audiences from your Acteol customer database for use in paid advertising.

  • Create lookalike audiences based on the characteristics of your best customers.

  • Sync audiences directly to Facebook Ads Manager and Google Ads.

  • Build audiences based on website traffic captured through the Website Tracking module.

  • Create engagement audiences from customers who have interacted with your Facebook or Instagram content.

  • Use CRM audiences to suppress existing customers from acquisition campaigns.

Audience types

The Audience Management module supports four types of audience:

  • Custom audiences: Built directly from your Acteol customer data. You select a segment from the Single Customer View (SCV). For example, your highest-value customers, lapsed visitors, or members of a specific loyalty tier and sync that list to Facebook or Google as a custom audience for targeting or suppression.

  • Lookalike audiences: Created by Facebook or Google based on the characteristics of a custom audience you provide. For example, uploading your top 10% of customers by spend allows the platform to find new users who share similar demographic and behavioural traits, helping you reach high-quality new prospects at scale.

  • Website traffic audiences: Built from anonymous or known visitor data captured by the Website Tracking module. You can target people who have visited specific pages or categories on your website, even if they are not yet in your Acteol database.

  • Engagement audiences: Built from customers or prospects who have interacted with your Facebook or Instagram content, such as watching a video, clicking an ad, or following your page. These audiences are useful for retargeting people who have shown an interest in your brand.

Syncing audiences to Facebook and Google

Once an audience is built in the Audience Management module, it is synced to your connected advertising account. Audiences update automatically as your Acteol data changes, so your paid advertising always reflects your most current customer information.

📌 Note: To use the Audience Management module you must have an active Facebook Business Manager account and/or a Google Ads account connected to your Acteol instance. Contact your account manager to set up the connection.

Once synced, your audiences are available directly in Facebook Ads Manager and Google Ads to use in your paid campaigns, just like any other audience you have built natively in those platforms.

Using audiences for suppression

As well as targeting, custom audiences can be used for suppression, preventing your ads from being shown to people you do not want to reach. Common suppression use cases include:

  • Excluding existing customers from a new customer acquisition campaign.

  • Suppressing recently lapsed customers from a re-engagement campaign until a set period has passed.

  • Excluding customers who have already redeemed a specific offer.

🤓 Tip: Combining a custom audience for targeting with a suppression list is one of the most effective ways to reduce wasted ad spend and improve return on investment from your paid campaigns.

Key things to know

  • Audience Management is an additional Acteol Enterprise module. Contact your account manager to add it to your package.

  • A connected Facebook Business Manager account and/or Google Ads account is required before audiences can be synced.

  • Audiences built from Acteol customer data update automatically as your database changes.

  • Website traffic audiences require the Website Tracking module to be active.

  • Customer data shared with Facebook and Google for audience matching is subject to those platforms’ data usage policies. Ensure your use of this feature is compliant with your privacy policy and applicable data protection regulations.

  • The Campaigns module can be used alongside Audience Management to run coordinated email and paid social campaigns to the same customer segments.
